Continuing Education
Technology, as well as codes and standards and business and management practices, continually evolve as one progresses through his or her career. To be at the forefront of the profession, engineers have an obligation to stay up-to-date with advancements that affect their industry and specialty areas. Canon 7 in ASCE's Code of Ethics states "Engineers shall continue their professional development throughout their careers, and shall provide opportunities for the professional development of those engineers under their supervision." It further reads "Engineers should keep current in their specialty fields by engaging in professional practice, participating in continuing education courses, reading in the technical literature, and attending professional meetings and seminars." Actively participating in continuing education helps individuals' career growth, the profession advance, and ultimately benefits the safety, health, and welfare of the public. Continuing Professional Competency (CPC) Requirements for License Renewal Some jurisdictions have CPC requirements, while others do not. Check with individual jurisdictions to determine their specific requirements. Visit http://www.ncees.org/licensure/ for information on how to contact individual licensing boards in the United States and its territories. ASCE Continuing Professional Development Program CEUs vs. PDHs The National Council of Examiners for Engineering and Surveying (NCEES) prepared a manual entitled "Continuing Professional Competency Guidelines" that "provides guidelines for the jurisdictions and territories that have or are planning to have continuing professional competency requirements for relicensing." In this document, the terms professional development hour (PDH) and Continuing Education Unit (CEU) are defined. See below for these definitions. Refer to NCEES' "Continuing Professional Competency Guidelines" for further information on PDH and CEU requirements and criteria. Also, check with individual jurisdictions and territories for their specific requirements. PDH - A contact hour (nominal) of instruction or presentation. The common denominator for other units of credit. CEU - Unit of credit customarily used for continuing education courses. One continuing education unit equals 10 hours of class in approved continuing education course. Ideas - Are you interested in proposing, preparing, and presenting a new seminar for ASCE?
